Day Eleven: Part Three

With the ‘touristy’ part of the day behind us we set off for a touch of retail therapy before having a late lunch of baguettes back in Place Kleber.  Abbey used up some of her pocket money on a carousel ride whilst Zac used all of his up on the new Barcelona strip.  By 1500 we were all in need of a rest and respite from the heat so made our way back to the hotel for a siesta.

They just kept popping up everywhere
Back at the hotel the boys disappeared to the foyer area to play the free x-box whilst Abbey and I enjoyed some French music videos and caught up on some colouring and the blog.

We were back out on the streets by 1700 and the day was still absolutely baking (not that we were complaining!).  A pre-dinner drink was definitely in order so we stopped in the Petite France area at the Golden Gate Café (not sure why it was called this!)

As Nathan would say, we did a spot of ‘chillaxing’!

Refreshed, we wandered up past the Cathedral checking out potential dinner spots.  In the end we chose a more traditional venue along Rue du Maroquin Kurewegass, the Zum alten Strassburg Restaurant, Au Vieux Strasbourg Restaurant.
Both kids chose the Knacks with their eyes on the ice cream for dessert whilst Nathan and I sampled the local Tarte flambée an Alsatian dish composed of bread dough rolled out very thin in the shape of a rectangle (traditionally) or circle, which is covered with fromage blanc or crème fraîche, thinly sliced onions and lardons. It is one of the most famous gastronomical specialties of the region.  Depending on the region, this dish can be called in Alsatian flammekueche, in German Flammkuchen, which means "Flame cake" or in French tarte flambée, which translates as "Pie baked in the flames." Contrary to what the direct translation would suggest tarte flambée is not usually flambéed, but cooked in a wood-fire oven and looks just like a thin crust pizza.

After a fabulous meal (and no we couldn’t quite finish the tarte flambées) we made our way slowly back to the hotel and bed.
