Now that the dust has settled....

I am sitting writing this in early March enjoying a resurgence of summer weather oddly satisfied in the knowledge that our UK friends haven’t seen the sun in weeks.  I know that sounds petty but it goes some way to making up for the fact that we are no longer amongst them and the harsh reality that, in no uncertain terms, our ‘holiday’ is well and truly over.

My last blog spoke of us getting the keys to our defence property and the arrival of our goods from storage.  The holiday may well have been over but it seems our life was to continue to be slightly adventurous, if on a more domestic scale, for a few months to come.  We spent our first night in our new home feeling like newly weds (though the presence of the kids did put paid to that idea) or that we were in an under equipped holiday cottage.  We had beds but minimal linen, a BBQ but not much to eat off and not a working TV in sight.  A big thank you must go to Sarah who came to the party with blankets, crockery and other emergency supplies and we managed to hit up other friends for pillows and a screw driver – you would be surprised how much that came in handy!

We spent the lead up to Christmas spending a fortune on electrical goods and attempting to make the house as livable as possible on the off chance our air freight, which would contain 16 boxes of kitchen and linen goods, arrived later than the promised two week delivery date.  Christmas day was spent with the Coleman’s and their English relatives with the weather also deciding to turn English for the day.  Boxing Day saw us hitting the road, not to some exotic European city, but to Victoria to spend time first with my family and then with Grandma and Pa.  It was fabulous to catch up with everyone and see how much our plethora of nieces and nephews have grown but, when the temperatures peaked at over 40 degrees whilst on the second leg of our journey, we remembered that there are some things about an Australian summer that we have not missed!

We returned home in time to celebrate Zac’s 11th birthday but, sadly, the week we had prior to Nathan starting work in Sydney, did not see the arrival of our air freight.  This naturally didn’t arrive until the following week when thanks must go to Sarah once again for taking the kids for the day so I could concentrate on some unpacking.  Our goods though had thankfully arrived just in time for the kids and I to head up to stay at Nathan’s new bachelor pad in Sydney where we enjoyed a city mini break that included Australia Day and some fantastic fire works at Darling Harbour.

By the time the kids started back at school at the end of January I was well and truly ready to see them go and, thankfully, they both seem to have settled in rather well with Zac in particular being remembered by many of his year 6 class mates – and, in case you are interested, he has still managed to be the tallest boy at school.  Zac was also very pleased to discover that the amount of homework required would be far far less than he was used to whilst Abbey was simply pleased to finally be in a class larger than 7!  Abbey also experienced her first ever packed lunch and seems to be coping well with the transition to independent catering.  Both kids were also very pleased when I became a weekly volunteer at the tuck shop as now every Thursday is lunch order day and Mum is known to pass them the odd treat at play time – the perks of the job no less!

Heading into February life started to settle into some sort of routine.  Nathan became our weekend visitor also managing the odd meeting in Canberra meaning he could be home just a bit more often.  I started back at Tae Kwon Do with Abbey also breaking in her martial arts skills, Nathan has starred on as a member of the RAN Veteran’s Old Salts rugby team taking on the ACT Veterans during the opener for a Brumbies match at Bruce Stadium (needless to say the score was 9 all with the winner being rugby).  Zac has also brushed off his rugby boots to start training with the Queanbeyan Whites.  Zac finished the school swimming gala setting new records for his age group in both the Freestyle and Breast stroke 50 meter races.  He went on to compete at the Northern Region Swimming Carnival and can definitely hold his head up high only being out swum by some quite amazing swimmers (with the other parents comparing PB’s: how can you compete when the only PB for son stands for  ‘Pain in the Butt’!)  Both Nathan and I have hit the rather hot pavements to continue being running fools.  I have both the Canberra and Sydney Half Marathons in sight whilst Nathan enjoys the more scenic running route around Mrs Macquarie’s Chair on the shores of Sydney Harbour though how he survives midday runs in that humidity is beyond my comprehension.  We have also begun our very own Grand Designs beginning to look at actually building something on the block of land we have now owned for some six years.   Perhaps the most shocking news of all is that, against all the odds particularly as I wasn’t even looking for one, I have actually been offered paid employment working as a medical receptionist once a week during school ours no less.  Now if I can only negotiate school holidays off I may have just discovered the Holy Grail!

Low and behold, on the 27th of February our sea freight finally arrived.  Naturally it arrived during torrential rain and late in the afternoon, meaning the removalists had to simply dump the majority of the boxes in the garage so they would be finished in time for me to pick the kids up from school.  Nearly a week and a half later I have finally unpacked everything, though please don’t look in the garage or spare room, as I am still to find homes for many items!  It was great though to unpack all our souvenirs, which brought memories of all our adventures flooding back.  We may need to purchase a larger fridge to house our now impressive collection of fridge magnets!

Speaking of all those happy memories, now the dust has somewhat settled, I have decided it would be only fitting to create one final, and all inclusive, list to take one last look at the adventure that was…….
