One of the most talked about events on the school calendar was with us again, the school summer BBQ. Amazingly, it did indeed feel like a (cool) summer’s evening as we arrived at school on Friday. As part of my role on the Friends of Heywood committee I had spent the afternoon helping set up the event and we also arrived early to add the finishing touches. Nathan and I were also running a stand this year. Some might call it the Wellington Throw but not us. Welcome to the 2011 Gumboot Toss!
Bringing some more of our culture to their town!
The Gumboot Toss was the surprise hit of the evening. We had Year Three and above attempting to toss Nathan’s Size 13 boot whilst the little ones were let off with a much smaller boot and prizes were awarded at the end of the evening for the longest toss with each boot. It was amazing how competitive some of the kids got over a box of chocolates. Nathan and I were kept very busy ensuring no one got knocked out by a rather heavy boot which amazingly only went over the school wall twice!
The other big draw card of the evening was the Gladiator stand. The kids participated in pairs attempting to knock each other off the pedestals. Violence is always so much fun!

Abbey’s tactic – launch your self at your opponent and ask questions later!
Abbey and Zac were on the go all evening taking in the English favourite of Coconut Shy, Ball in the Bog, Face painting, hair spray, penalty shootouts, the stocks, the chair swing, the jumping castle and culminating in a tug of war competition. We even managed to get them to eat a hamburger between mouthfuls of sweets.
Zac took his turn in the Stocks with good humour!
Two, Six, Heave!
It was another late night by the time the event finished and the usual crowd stayed behind to clean up but once again it was a great success.
