After months of preparation, it was finally time for the Heywood School production. This year we were to be entertained by the musical “Gel”. The production would include all the students from Year 4 to Year 6. Zac was cast as a Roman Soldier as well as having a role in the chorus of a number of scenes. During the course of rehearsals Zac could be heard around the house belting out show tunes with great gusto but he kept quiet as to the plot of the play. Abbey was lucky enough to have a sneak preview during the dress rehearsal at school Monday morning, but even she refused to give away any of the plot so Nathan and I were forced to wait until the Thursday evening performance.
The school hall was filled to capacity for the 7pm start and we were thoroughly entertained over the course of the next hour. Whilst the plot was a little thin at times, the kids were brilliant, all giving it 100%. Zac was a real star and quite dapper in his soldier’s costume and sang wonderfully in all his scenes. Nathan and I even earned an apology from the school principal and head teacher over one little number regarding Australian Soaps which was quite amusing (yes, we brought a little bit of our culture to their country). They obviously don’t know much about the Aussie sense of humor as we thought it was hilarious.
After the final number the audience clapped the kids from the hall with Zac managing to be last on stage sporting a huge smile. They were all on such a high as they were treated to drinks and a snack in the barn. Abbey also got in on the act with some of her own classmates so she was in 7th heaven. It was rather late by the time we got our budding actor home to bed but the evening was definitely a success.
