Day Ten: 7th

Stage Three of the Giro d’Italia

The day dawned a tad overcast today so we were hoping it would clear so we could get our towels dry before tomorrow’s departure. We spent the morning pottering around the site. Nathan actually managed to clear a rather large blockage in our grey water pipe (this had meant we were unable to use even the kitchen sink) then multitasked by assisting Abbey on her bike. Whilst she is definitely not up to a long ride yet she is slowly gaining confidence.

By 11am it was time to torture Zac once again and get back on the bikes. With mounting humidity we set off taking a different route into town – oops, more hills, sorry Zac! He was not a happy camper to say the very least. We finally managed to make it to a lovely hilltop piazza, Piazza San Bernado, in the little village of Montinelle. We did feel a little guilty when we saw a temperature reading of 35 degrees but then we were all in one piece so no harm done!

We sat at a little bar for lunch and treated the kids with iced chocolates and ourselves with ice cold coronas. The Piazza afforded fantastic views of the surrounding hills and of course the lake with everything blanketed in a haze of humidity. As the temperature rose to 36 degrees we decided it was time to head back for a siesta and a swim.

We were particularly taken with the tablecloths!

Hey, she didn't drink it! She was just using the cold bottle to cool herself down. We are not quite that European!

Zac was a lot happier with the more downhill aspect of the ride home easily keeping up with the breakaway group. Abbey sat behind Nathan keeping him thoroughly entertained with her own composition of ‘Goosey Lucy”. I, of course, took up the rear just in case I had to pick up any pieces of Zac along the way. After a final swim at Camp Zocco we began to pack up in preparation for tomorrow’s departure. As always happens when you are camping and ready to leave, it began to rain. We ate our first inside dinner of the holiday before taking an early mark to bed.

  1. Please remember that in thirty years time you will be continually reminded of these bike rides. The downhill bit and the iced chocolate will I assure you be completely forgotten.
